Password-protecting a PDF: what you need to know

Adding a password to a PDF is a simple way to limit access to a document.

Encryption: RC4 or AES-128

Depending on your browser, IWELAH's protection tool uses RC4 or AES-128. Encryption is applied to the generated PDF file. Pages are also rasterized, meaning text is no longer selectable after protection.

Choosing a good password

• At least 12 characters.
• Mix upper, lower, digits and symbols.
• Never reuse a password.

Limits

No password is unbreakable. For highly sensitive documents, combine password protection with secure transmission.
